Switching to a natural deodorant
Natural deodorant is yet again something I can thank the blogger world for. For the longest time I was perfectly content with what I was using and I never thought there would be a day I’d step away from my husbands Irish Spring deodorant haha.
For about a year I heard of the natural deodorant brand, Native, and not one time during that year did I hear something negative about it, which of course had me more interested. I still wasn’t 100% on board because again, I didn’t think there was anything wrong with what I was using. Towards the end of that year I heard a lot of bloggers talking about how Native had no aluminum in it and I guess that was something that I was super clueless on!
Here is what I learned that instantly made me switch.
– Natural deodorants don’t block pores which allows you to sweat! Antiperspirants do and that is what keeps you from sweating.
– Natural deodorants allow the good bacteria on your skin to work, helping to reduce odor, even when you’re not wearing deodorant. Sweat itself doesn’t cause body odor, but when mixed with the bacteria on your skin, it can stink. Natural deodorants help control the bacteria, therefore reducing (or eliminating) the stench. This was my favorite!
– Natural deodorants do not contain aluminum-based compounds. In regular antiperspirants, those compounds temporarily plug the sweat ducts. Aluminum in our deodorants has also been said to lead to cancer and really harm our bodies.
Choosing a deodorant
Of course I went with Native because that was all the I was hearing of. And of course after I start using Native I start to hear about all the other natural deodorant brands out there. I’m sure one day I’ll make the switch to try them all out, but I’ve very happy with my decision and results from Native. I’m currently trying to convince my husband to get on board because I know he’ll be so much happier. I’m not just saying that either! We’re both pretty big sweaters (sorry babe) and I’ve told Kyler that I don’t sweat as much and I know he would do the same. Looking back, I’ve started to think that not clogging our pores has made our bodies stop tying to overcompensate for what it was trying to get out.
I’m a huge scent person and the last ‘girly’ scent I used was Teen Spirit in strawberry – a total throwback!!! Since then I’ve mainly used musky smells and figured the stronger the scent the more likely it would hide me if I smelled. I didn’t think I’d like any of the girl scents and actually really like the Coconut Vanilla. All four of the original scents smell heavenly but this was my personal favorite. below I also have the link to the women’s and men’s deodorants if you want to see all the scents they have!
I had to detox my armpits!!
The idea of having to detox my armpits was not at all one of my worries and it should have been. I can honestly say the only bad part about switching to a more natural deodorant is being part of the 50% that experience pit detoxing. A lot of people who I have heard talk about switching to natural deodorant have said they were lucky and didn’t detox and others said it was so bad they considered switching back to their normal deodorant.
I was the ding-dong that started using the Native deodorant at the beginning of my work week. If you don’t know, I’m a hairstylist and eyelash technician so my arms are always moving up and down and I’m always in people’s faces. I was so embarrassed and extremely self-conscious and had my coworkers walk by me and smell me multiple times a day to tell me if I stunk. The smell wasn’t terrible but it wasn’t pleasant haha. Since I was using the Vanilla Coconut scent, I smelled like a mixture of vanilla and coconut mixed with b.o.
Thankfully my detoxing only lasted for about a week which I could handle for all the good I’m doing for my body. After the first day I did go home and look up ways to detox your pits. The top tricks was to drink more water – the water will flush out the toxins, sweat – the is a natural way of detoxing and helps speed up the process, check your diet – healthy foods in mean healthy out/ garbage in means garbage out, and lastly, dry brushing – helps to move odor causing toxins out of the body.
