Shaving your face!
I’m not really sure how new this trend is, but it is one of the newest to-do things in the skincare world! It took me a long time to jump on the whole shaving your face trend because I was slightly terrified on how the hair would grow back in…not even going to lie about it. I have only really been doing this for 5ish months and I’m surprised I love it as much as I do.
The more professional term is dermaplaning and if you have no idea what that means, it’s a very gentle skin resurfacing treatment utilizing a special surgical blade to manually remove the outermost layer of dead skin. I have actually had this professionally done and I loved it. It’s disgusting seeing how much dead skin and peach fuzz comes off but it’s also probably one of the best feelings ever. My skin has seriously never felt so smooth! I got mine done by my esthetician during one of my monthly facials. I know that in order to use a surgical blade it has to be a medical spa or a dermatologists office. However, there are plenty of tools that can still be used at a normal spa that aren’t considered a surgical blade.
As much as I loved getting it done professionally, I really don’t like paying for a service that takes all of 30 seconds to do. Seriously, it’s that easy and that quick! I started doing it at home and do it at the beginning of my skincare routine every Sunday. What I use is pictured below!
These are the Tinkle Eyebrow Razors. These are my favorite because there is a safety guard on the blade. They are also super inexpensive! I was purchasing them at Sally’s Beauty Supply and one pack of razors was $4. I came across them on amazon and this deal is 4 packs for $6.95.
Since these razors are so easy to use and are super inexpensive, I use them for quite a few things. My most obvious is my face, but I also use them to shape my brows and to get rid of any peach fuzz on my upper lip. I’m also the worst ankle shaver ever so I’ll use these to help get all those pesky hairs. Kyler even uses these razors on his neck when trimming! He is probably the worst shaver and is always missing so many spots haha. Another little trick I use them for is for pilling on sweaters or leggings!
why I do this
The biggest reason I do this is because I want my skincare to penetrate my skin more. I have no idea how much more beneficial it is for skincare but I have been told many times that removing that layer of dead skin and fuzz makes a world of difference. The second reason I do this is because I love the way my foundation goes on. The application is so much smoother! I’m a weirdo and like to apply my foundation with a brush vs a sponge and have noticed that I no longer get brush strokes on my face when I keep up with the dermaplaning! Again, not entirely sure how true this is for everyone but I notice it and love it!
how to at-home dermaplane
Hear me out because I am the worst at explaining things haha. If you get nothing from this I also have a tutorial on my stories saved in my highlights under at home derm haha.
I go in with the razor after washing my face with just a cleanser and make sure it’s dry. I’ll then take the razor and start on one side of my face and work in downward motions while holding my skin below fairly tight. You do have to wipe the razor off after each swipe (here is where you’ll see all the nasty and I have a photo posted below showing off a single swipe from my face) and you may also notice your skin getting a little pink from scraping off the dead skin/fuzz but it goes away pretty quickly. After, I wash my face with water to get any fuzz off that I may have missed and then apply a generous amount of moisturizer to that fresh newly exposed layer of skin.
It’s super important that if you do this, you want to make sure that you’re going into your skincare doing this first to avoid any complications. If you have sensitive skin I recommend not exfoliating directly after and waiting a day or two. Something else I do after is use a steamer to open up my pores and apply a really good Vitamin C Serum!
