Our kitchen makeover + cheap ways to decorate your counters
I am by no means a home decor expert. I’m still trying to figure out my style and what all I want to do in our home, but I get asked a lot to share our space and that has really pushed me to start putting each room together. I decided to start with the kitchen because it has been an ongoing project since moving in four years ago. In a perfect world we would get all new appliances and replace the floors but they aren’t doing any harm, so for now it’s just a lot of cosmetic changes. Below is a little before and after to share with you all of when we first moved in to where we’re at now.
It’s insane what a little bit of paint, hardware, and decor does to a space. Replacing the countertops and adding a backsplash made the biggest difference and probably some of my favorite changes in the house.
I’ve said this many times but I’m honestly the most indecisive person there is and it’s taken many coats of paint to finally get where we are. When we first moved in, the dark brown cabinets with gray walls was the trend. I attempted to stain the cabinets a dark brown and I did such a terrible job that I’m not even going to show you what that looked like haha. Shortly after that I decided I wanted an all white kitchen. Two years into having the white is when we got granite counters and did the backsplash. Doing the backsplash with my parents and Kyler made us all realize we don’t want to backsplash a kitchen with subway tile ever again. Then, a week ago is when I decided my dream of having an all white kitchen wasn’t practical with babies and truthfully I didn’t really like it once I had it. Pinterest was awesome for finding the color I wanted for the cabinets and for helping me decide on what type of cabinet handles to invest in.
Paint: Sherwin Willaims Repose Gray 7015
Cabinet handles: Home Depot Golden Champagne Cabinet Pull & Golden Champagne Cabinet Knob
Subway Tile: Home Depot Park Slope Subway
Counter tops: granite (I do not remember the name of the place we used)
Cheap ways to decorate your counters
Due to my lack of commitment when it comes to decor I thrive off of inexpensive projects that make space feel a little more put together. I know kitchen counters can seem busy and cluttered if too much is on them so I did my best to make sure whatever we had on the counters was functional and not a big distraction.
–Canisters are a favorite of mine. Not only are they pretty, but the actually serve a purpose. We keep all of our snacks in them for easy access. They are also very on trend right now. Amazon has awesome choices and most sets of three are under $40!
-If you keep utensils out on the counter in a utensil holder, try throwing some wooden ones in there. We actually keep most of our utensils in a drawer and now have our utensil holder strictly for decor (Kyler thinks it’s silly..I say its trendy haha). A bag of wooden utensils is less than $10 and makes a big difference.
-Putting hand soaps, dish soaps and olive oils often used in glass containers makes them blend in across the counter. There are also a ton of very pretty glass bottles out there! Just don’t get them mixed up!
-Put your hand soap and dish soap on a tray by the sink! This not only helps to add a little decor but it makes the area by the sink look put together. I like to group things in three and prefer different heights. On our tray we have our dish soap, hand soap, and a scrubber brush that has actually never been used because it’s too pretty.
-Keep your most used appliances out if they don’t bother you. We keep our Keurig and Kitchen Aid Stand Mixer out at all times because they are used almost daily and they blend in with our decor.
-Flowers!!!! I found a super cheap pitcher at home goods and always make sure there is some sort of flower arrangement in them. I can get our flowers to last about three weeks. You can get a small bouquet of flowers for $5 at some grocery stores.
