messy bun tutorial
The most asked question I get in my messages on Instagram is how I do a messy bun. Half the time I never know what to say back because honestly it comes super natural to me & I keep having to remind myself that it doesn’t come as easy to others. I wear a messy bun 8 out of the 7 days a week & you best believe that my hair is packed down with dry shampoo. It’s easy for me & at the moment, most convenient because Laken is super attached to me, & shampooing with a 17 month old on my hip isn’t ideal. I’m probably one of the laziest people when it comes to hair & if I can get my hair looking presentable in less than a minute without any added hair accessories, then I’m good. I made a little video for you all just to show you how quick I do it! I hope it helps!
I have found it wayyy more effective to wrap the hair around in to a bun shape before using the Invisibobble. I also find it a little easier being able to hide those hairs that pop out or don’t go where you want them to using the wrap method. for someone who has more layers that wants to use this method I would run a styling cream through the mid-shaft to the ends to help get those layers to hold.
I use three things for my messy buns:
1. dry shampoo (duh)
The dry shampoo I’m using in the video is the Hempz Herbal Dry Shampoo. It smells absolutely amazing & didn’t leave behind any white residue. I’m not picky with dry shampoo b/c I thank the Hair Gods every day for it being invented. If you’re not sure what dry shampoo you like you can always click h e r e to see my top 5 favorite dry shampoos.
2. Invisibobble
These have replaced all my hair ties! They are extremely stretchy & DO NOT SNAP!!!!! They have all sorts of fun colors & stretch further than a normal hair tie would. The rubber on the Invisibobble is enough to hold those extra hairs that you would normally have to pin away.
3. medium hold hairspray
I think anyone who has had a baby totally understands the struggle with those teeny tiny baby hairs all around our faces so I usually just spray them down with a medium hold hairspray. The one I’m using in the video is the Hempz Herbal Workable Hairspray. I personally prefer a medium or a lighter hold hairspray
*little disclaimer: I do have a ton of hair & my hair is fairly long so I do have a little bit of an advantage when it comes to making my bun look more full. Anyone is capable of making their hair look 10X more full than it is though. It’s all by how you manipulate what you have.
