Let’s talk laser hair removal
I want to give a big thank you to Aestheticare Med Spa here in Lawrence for once again allowing me to work with them. I’ve been going to them for all my dysport, facial and lip tinting needs for almost two years and I will continue to go to them or as long as I can. If you are new to Aestheticare, you can mention my name when scheduling and they’ll give you $50 off your service.
Their June special is laser hair removal and it’s buy 3 treatments, get 1 free.
You all know how much I love being able to test treatments out and share my experience with you all. So, let’s add laser hair removal to the list! I had my first of many treatments today and am very excited to share what my thoughts are, along with the lengthy Q&A I have from all the questions you all asked over on Instagram a few weeks ago!
So, I am a first time laser hair removal client. I’m learning as I go and I had a lot of the same questions you all did. I personally chose to do my whole Brazilian area (front + back). I was originally going to do bikini, but decided that if I’m going for it I might as well go all out. Unfortunately I won’t be showing pictures of the process…as it’s all of my lady bits, but I will be doing a final post talking bout what my thoughts are as a whole over laser hair removal.
Some ways that I feel that I will truly benefit from getting laser hair removal is that I am very prone to ingrown hairs and razor burns. It’s a normal thing to get both. I am also very fair and I don’t love having bright red dots all over me. I prefer getting waxed over having to shave but I’m ready to be done with both!
If you’re new to laser like me then I’m sure pain and how laser hair removal works is a big question. Everyone’s pain level is different and I didn’t feel anything other than some warmth from the laser. The pain is compared to a rubber band being snapped on the skin and I learned that in areas where the hair is more coarse you are more likely to feel that ‘snap’ and the only area I felt it was on the top (closer to the clitoris), and it lasted less than a second. The service as a whole lasted maybe 10 minutes. It went by way quicker than I thought it would.
I learned a lot about the whole process or how the hair goes away over time. The laser hair removal machine vaporizes the hair away. There is a smell (similar to burning hair) and you want that. It’s a big indication that the treatment is working. I’m not sure how all of the laser hair removal machines are set up but this one in particular had a piece attached below the laser part that was 4 degrees cooler to instantly cool the skin once it’s hit with the laser. The process is fast and is done in long passes which makes it go so quick!
How much is it? Price varies depending on the area being treated. The smallest areas we treat start at $50 per treatment and it goes up from there.
Does it hurt? Professional laser hair removal performed by trained providers is not considered painful. Most patients report feeling a rubber band snap sensation for a millisecond that quickly dissipates. This may be followed by a sunburn feeling that doesn’t last longer than it’ll take you to leave our office.
Are there side effects? LESS HAIR! 🙂 Negative side effects from laser hair removal are rare and usually occur at the hands of inexperienced providers. If not performed properly, hyperpigmentation, blisters, or even burns may happen. It’s always important to provide up to date medical history and medications as this can play a role in your treatment. ( some medications make skin light sensitive)
Does it work better on a certain skin color? Yes and No. Light skin with dark hair is the easiest to treat. That being said we can treat ANY skin color as long as the hair has pigment. ( no blonde or grey, sometimes red hair can be tricky)
Does it matter the color your hair is? Yes, hair must have pigment to be effectively treated. The laser is attracted to the melanin in the hair.
Does laser require upkeep? Yes, most patients will need anywhere from 1-4 treatments a year to maintain the results. This varies greatly patient to patient.
How many treatments does it take? While the majority of clients experience maximum results after 6 to 8 treatments, we encourage our clients to have the number of laser hair removal treatments that achieve their desired results.
Is laser okay for sensitive skin? Absolutely! We often treat patients whose skin is too sensitive to shave or wax.
Is hair gone forever in the treated area? No, our bodies are constantly changing and we can create new hair follicles in the treatment area. Hormones also play a very big role in hair growth. You will see a long lasting reduction in the treatment area.
Can the hair grow back over time in the treated area? Yes, but rarely is it all of the hair. When this happens it’s usually only a small percentage of hair that grows back.
Can laser hair removal be done on the face? YES!
Can laser hair removal be done over tattoos? We would not recommend this, it would likely affect your tattoo in a negative way and could increase your risks of a burn or blister.
How long is a treatment? The bigger the area the longer the treatment. But, Most treatments are under an hour. ( ex: upper lip 15min, under arms 15 min, Brazilian 30 mins..etc)
Something I want to add to this is and this is what I have learned from hair school is that hair can grow back at any moment due to a hormone imbalance, trauma to an area, or hitting a very big stage in life. By a big stage in life I mean having a baby, hitting menopause, or having to go on a strong medication. Hair growth truly has a mind of its own and this is something to keep in mind when getting any type of hair removal service done.
