How to get fuller lips without lip filler – 6 easy hacks
I have always been attracted to fuller lips. I almost want to call them Bratz Doll (remember those?!) lips where they’re a little bit pouty but not too big. Anyways, prior to getting my lip flip I had been doing hack after hack with basic makeup products to help achieve the lip look I want. It doesn’t haven’t to be expensive and most of these hacks can be used with products you already have.
adding a natural lip stain
Full disclosure here that I got a lip tint a couple years back and you can read all about that here, but during that process I learned that as we get older we lose the pigment the helps to define our lips. That was a major shock that I was totally oblivious to because I had never actually sat down and stared at my lip line. It never once crossed my mind that my lip line would eventually fade away. At 24 I had lost almost all pigment in the corner of my lips.
What I got done with the lip tint is exactly what can be achieved with any drug store lip stain and it made a huge difference! Stains can be very natural too and all you’re really looking for is that definition! I always top my lips off with a lip treatment to lock in a shine and I have some of my fav lip stain options below!
Outlining your lips with self tanner
If you’ve been scrolling on TikTok then I’m sure you’ve seen this AND IT WORKS! So, you take self tanner and a thin makeup brush and put the self tanner on your lips like you’re applying lip liner…make sure you’re making the line on the thinner side. You want to make sure you don’t go outside of your lip line. When I did mine I left the self tanner on maybe 30 minutes. The hardest part is remembering you have it on and not touching it.
This isn’t a long lasting solution and lasts maybe two/three days but it looks good and so dang natural! Again, I always apply a lip treatment after for maximum moisture. I have my fav self tanner that I use for body and on my lips linked below.
the lip liner trick
This hack is my favorite and I do it every single day! I do it under glosses, lipsticks, lip treatments, and I even wear it on its own! I have a whole TikTok showing the process that you can watch here for a step by step. Take a nude or pinky lip liner (my favs are linked below) and apply it in the area of your cupids bow and then differently underneath on your lower lip. You do not want to take this liner all the way to the corner and it should only cover about an inch of lip on the top and bottom.
The trick after (and this is why using a natural/mauve color is important) is to take your ring finger and smudge the liner into your lip. Smudging will help to blur the liner out and make it more natural. It’s an instant difference and as always, I apply a lip treatment to make more of a pop!
plumping gloss / lip treatment
There are some intense lip plumping glosses that will double the size of your lips and they are freaking amazing. With those glosses there does tend to be a little bit of a tingle but that tingle is what helps to plump your lips. With all plumping glosses I’ve used they never last more than a couple hours so this is an awesome fix if you’re going out!
I keep talking about a lip treatment and I believe this is an absolute must in every persons daily use items. A lit treatment is far more complex than a chapstick. Lip treatments tend to have more active ingredients that a regular chapstick can’t have in it. Quoted below is taken from the description of the Revision Skincare Youthful Lip Treatment that I recommend. You can read more about it here and I have the treatment itself linked below.
“The definitive solution for youthful lips, Revision Skincare’s YouthFull Lip Replenisher™ renews youthfulness with a scientifically advanced formula that targets the visible signs of lip aging. This proprietary formula replenishes the appearance of volume and contour. Potent antioxidants defend against environmental stressors. Hyaluronic acid delivers immediate and intense hydration to help lips look fuller and more youthful. ”
lip contour with bronzer for a pouty lip
Lip contouring for bronzer is an entirely different approach than any other type of contouring. I swear using bronzer in the right place will change everything! Prior to doing the lip liner hack I would contour my lips every day. This looks very natural and pretty on a full face of makeup and can be achieved with a little bit of bronzer(a light eyeshadow works too) and a smaller fluffy makeup brush. I have never gone out a purchased a product to do this and always made do with what I already had. I don’t some of my fav bronzers linked below if you’re in the market for one.
It’s important to add that you want to make sure any type of liquid foundation is set around the lips to prevent a muddy contour to happen. It also just makes it way easier to blend this way. Take the small brush and a small amount of contour and take it right underneath the center of your bottom lip and blend it into the lip line. Adding contour there will give the illusion of a shadow and make your bottom lip appear to be bigger. The same works for applying to the cupids bow area. That shadow look there will make the top of your lip look more pouty.
To spice things up a bit you can totally add some highlighter to the very top of cupids bow/lip to add some more dimension.
getting a lip flip + filler
As always, there is lip filler and a treatment called the lip flip that will help to enhance your lips. I’ve gotten the lip flip done a handful of times now and I love it. What I love about it is that when I smile my lips are even whereas before one side of my lip would turn up a bit. It’s also incredibly natural and very inexpensive compared to filler. I did do a whole blog post on my lip flip that you can read more about here.
Lip filler on the other hand will make your lips bigger & fuller. I can’t speak a whole lot on lip filler because it’s never really sparked an interest. However, lip filler isn’t permanent and it does break down overtime. I personally never see myself getting lip filler because I like enhancing what I have. Price is also a big thing and it’s just not in my budget.
