Cowgirl Copper + formula and fading
Whoah! I’m obsessed. For the longest time I have always said, “In another life I’m a red head!”. I am LIVING for this #cowgirlcopper trend. I’ve been playing with this hair color for a couple months now and I don’t know if I’ll ever get over just how pretty it is. Red hair is seriously the superior of all hair colors and I’m so envious of all you naturals out there! With changing my hair there’s been a few DM’s and in-person questions asking all about going from blonde to copper so, here is everything I know and what I did for my Cowgirl Copper.
Semi-permanent baby! Meaning this isn’t something that is made to last. It IS a color deposit but it’s also made to fade. I’m super familiar with the Redken Shades EQ line, and most stylists/most clients call this and know this as a ‘toner’. A toner helps to cancel any unwanted tones OR can be used as a deposit. In this case we’re using it strictly for the color deposit. So what was my goal and what was my formula???
My goal in all of this is to eventually fade to a really pretty strawberry blonde and then eventually get back into being a blonde. However, I’m really enjoying this copper against my skin tone and with my every day clothing.
Formula and processing time
I have both of the photos down below with the formulas in the caption. I applied the colors both time on dry hair. You can apply the color on wet hair, however, you’re not allowing the pigment to fully adhere to the hair. For upmost saturation, it’s best to apply on dry hair. I let both times sit for about 8ish minutes. Typically you want the toner to sit anywhere from 10-20 minutes, but my hair pulls really dark with this particular semi-permanent line(my hair is super porous) and I can’t leave it on any longer than that.
**I cannot stress enough that prior to this copper I was a very bright blonde – level 9. I cannot promise you will get the exact results that I have gotten.**
The biggest difference in these two formulas is I upped the level with clear on the left mainly because I was a bit nervous to go copper. In the chance I didn’t care for it against my skin tone, it wouldn’t take as long to fade. The right I chose to not add the clear because I’ve really been enjoying the tone and wanted to up the vibrancy a bit. Truly the best Cowgirl Copper!
How does it wear and going back blonde
Copper on top of blonde fades beautifully! The warm tone looks so purposeful and still provides so much dimension. It’s the most ideal ‘faded’ color. Like I said above, my whole end goal was subtle strawberry blonde. I just think it’s the most gorgeous color. If you’re wanting to refresh the color it gets more vibrant each color application. Again, so pretty!!
As far as going back to blonde…that is a good question!!! Haha! I haven’t given my hair the chance to fully go back to blonde. It’s more of just a science with hair that regardless of what I want my hair to do, I will have to go through the warm phase and be a little more (orange/yellow) than I would prefer in order to get back to my bright champagne blonde. There’s an absolute art of transitioning while keeping the integritiy and that will be my main focus regardless of how. But again, no rush because I’m really enjoying this color!
I have gotten my roots touched up since adding the copper. The stylist that does my hair and myself decided on a toner that would be more of a fill-in to blend my new blonde to old blonde. It was both discussed and decided that I would need to get re-tone within a couple weeks…which I did today! Haha! Hope this gives an insight and some help on the cowboy copper trend!
